Welcome to Day-2 of my 8-part mini-series titled, 8 Truths Rachel Ray Hopes You Never Find Out About Writing a Cookbook. Discovering these 8 Truths will put you well on your way to writing and publishing the cookbook that you’ve been dreaming about.
Truth 2: Many people falsely believe that writing a cookbook is a tedious and time-consuming endeavor. In reality, if you can commit to an hour a day and are able to follow a well thought out action plan, you can complete your cookbook in as little as 6 months. If you can’t commit to an hour a day it will take longer to write, but it’s still doable. You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish by doing a little bit each day. I’m not sure who said it first, but we tend to overestimate what can be accomplished in a day and underestimate what can be accomplished in a year. I’m guilty of that too.
Where do you get that action plan? This blog is one source. Other authors who have written a cookbook are another. Talk to them if you can. Ask them lots of questions. There are even several cookbook authors who have outlined the steps needed to write a successful cookbook in a how-to format. Two that I personally have in my library are: You Can Write a Cookbook by J. Kevin Wolfe, and Recipe for a Cookbook by Gloria Chadwick. I’m sure there are others out there; you’ll just have to look for them.
So, block out some time each day, it doesn’t have to be a lot, and get started on that cook book you’ve been dreaming of writing. What are you going to be saying 6 months form now? “I wish I had …” or, “I did it!” The choice is yours. I’ll be here if you need anything.
I’ll see you back here tomorrow for Truth 3.
